THE CYRILLIC ALPHABET

If you are planning on learning Russian, it is best to learn the alphabet rather than relying on transliteration.
About a year ago I bought a language program from IMSI to help me practice my Russian, and when I ran the program, everything was transliterated with no cyrillics. I can't see how that is going to help at all. After all, if you are in the Moscow Metro, do you suppose you are going to see signs transliterated???? I won't use the program at all because I don't want to have to unlearn what I have already learned, and it is very difficult to read and write transliterated Russian.
One really easy way to learn the alphabet and something useful at the same time, especially if you are planning on traveling to Russia, is to go to a russian site and print out some maps, or lists of place names. Also, print out this alphabet. Then compare the names with this alphabet. If you are going to , then print out a Russian language map of the Metro, and familiarize yourself with all of the station names. You will be surprised at how fast you will learn the alphabet, and when you get to Moscow, you will find it easier to get around!

I am putting lists of place names, people's names, flower names, and other things that are interesting on this site for you to ptactice with so you won't have to search for them. Keep checking back for more.

About the letters below which have no sound. They actually affect the pronunciation of words to some degree, but I am trying to keep this as simple as possible. This is really just to help you learn the alphabet, and not a language course. You won't need to worry about them until you start learning the language, and then you will find out what they are for.
